I ate these alot growing up (in the '70s). Its so good to see old recipes like these are still circulating and loved. I found living in Florida now, that if you boil the mixture at least 3 mins maybe up to 4 or 5 mins, they will set without chilling them. If you don't boil long enough say 1 min, they turn out sticky and don't set well at all.

My mom made these and alot of other things when i was young. These are one of my favorite cookies and now my daughter's. I like to try to different things so i have added butterscotch chips, vanilla chips, coconut, peanuts,& toffee chips in with them. They all have all turned out good and rich. I didn't use them all at the same time but would be worth trying.

I have always used Old Fashioned Oats and real salted butter. I've learned somewhere along the way that Margarine is made with plastic and was originally white and made to fatten up Turkeys. Once the margarine was no longer used for this purpose, they added yellow food coloring and decided to feed humans this garbage. If you will take notice when you use it on your toast, the bread takes on the consistency of that of watered bread. Not appealing at all. Also it has been learned through scientific studies that margarine is much worse than real cream butter to our health. With all of this said, I no longer, and will never use margarine for cooking or on any of my food or recipes.
