Low-Carb Slaw

"This recipe supposedly earned its name because it is SO addictive and I agree! I absolutely love this stuff. You can just eat it with a fork or make lettuce wraps out of the mix. Simple and DELICIOUS! I say 4 servings here but really, my husband and I could polish off the batch with no problem!"

Reviews

  1. This was very good. I substituted ground turkey breast for the beef and broccoli slaw for the cole slaw and did not use the Splenda. I also substituted the low sodium soy sauce with Briggs Liquid Aminos. Will be making this again. DH is on a low carb post Bariatric surgery diet.

  2. Most excellent dish! For those complaining about the dish being bland, I used 1-1/3 pound of ground turkey, which has very little flavor, and added almost another half the amount of volume to the dish, thus less taste overall. Solution? Add more spices. More sesame oil, low-sodium soy & ginger paste. BTW, ginger paste (sold as 'Squeeze Ginger's) is light years ahead of ground, dry ginger. This is an epic recipe for our house.

  3. Fantastic !! Comes together quickly. Over the years of making this, I've stopped adding the Splenda, sugar, or any sweetener. You can sub chicken, shrimp, or any proteins. All will be super yummy.

  4. This is SOOO good! I used red pepper flakes - 2 ts, just the right amount of heat for me but a little too much for my 13yr old son. I use one lb of ground beef but double everything else. I think I could live off this stuff. Thanks for sharing a great recipe!

  5. This great. I made as written except I added 1 extra pkg of Splenda. It is easy to make too. Thanks for the recipe.

Tweaks

  1. I used Italian sausage, took meat out of casing. I will never use ground meat again.

  2. Tweaks: Sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds. Add chopped celery. When my carb count allows or I plan for it, a handful or two of sugar snap peas or snow peas. Wal-Mart has a bagged organic mix "Super Blend" of broccoli, cabbage, carrot & kale.10 oz bag 3.5 servings 6 carbs per 2 fiber so 4 net carbs. 2 g protein per serving.

  3. Cooked the meat with the garlic and ginger, salt and pepper. It was rxtra lean so did not drain. Dumped all other ingredients into the meat and cooked to my liking. The slaw had more flavour cooking it this way.

  4. I used powder ginger so I added a little extra and also a little extra sesame oil ...then I used grass fed beef and In keeping with the Asian theme I used BOK CHOY, in place of the coleslaw mix . It was amazing tasted like Chinese takeout !!!!

  5. Substituted Sriracha Sauce with Asian style Chili Garlic Sauce because I like the flavor of the sauce better. I think I am the only person that doesn't care for Sraracha sauce...

I grew up in Tucson but moved to Colorado in 1989 and live in a household with my husband, Dad, daughter and 3-year old twin granddaughters. Our 8-year old grandson spends 2 nights a week with us. All of that adds up to often difficult menu ideas to met everyone's tastes. Zaar is very addicting and I love trying the recipes I find here. I like to find recipes of people that I see are still active on Zaar and love it when I hear back from the Chef after I review the recipe. Everytime someone reviews one of my recipes, I like to find one of theirs to make and review as quickly as possible. It's a way for me to find great chefs I don't know yet too! My husband has high blood sugar so we try to watch our carbs, but it is not easy because we love them so much! I was diagnosed with brain tumors in 2005 and so far have had 5 surgeries that have left my eyelid droopy. I hope to have a surgery that will correct that soon!! There is still one tumor they have not removed but my wonderful doctor James Garrity at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN says they will leave it alone until or if it ever causes problems!
