Ground Beef and Potatoes (Oh so Simple!)

"This dish is almost too simple, but my husband loves it. I can make it any night and he's happy. I have tried to dress it up before and he politely has told me that he likes it plain and simple. This is nothing to write home about, but it seems to work in my household. It's fast, inexpensive, easy to make and doesn't require a lot of ingredients. I serve it with plenty of salted white rice and veggies."

directions

  • Heat about 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet. Add diced potatoes (about 1/4 inch cubes) and cook for about 10 mins or until slightly browned and mostly cooked through stirring occasionally.
  • Add lean ground beef to potatoes and brown, chopping it up into very small pieces and stirring and flipping often (about 10 minutes). (If you use lean ground beef, there is no need to drain - be sure to cook meat with potatoes as it does make a difference in the overall flavor).
  • Once meat is fully cooked, turn off burner and add about a 1/2 tsp of salt and stir in with spatula. Add more salt to taste if desired. Serve with salted white rice and veggies.

Questions & Replies

  1. Has anyone made this with ground turkey instead of ground beef? If so, what do you think? Spices good to add for flavor? I've never made anything with gound turkey but I have some on hand. Thanks in advance.

  2. For this recipe should I peel the potatos

  3. That's a good question. We have never made it with ground turkey, but I imagine with a little extra salt and black pepper it would be pretty good!

  4. Would this still b good with turkey instead of ground beef?

  1. Wow! What a surprise. It was late, we were hungry, and my oven had just died. I just wanted to put something on the table. A recipe this uncomplicated couldn't be too tasty, could it? But ... it was delicious. Following the suggestions of others, I substituted seasoned salt for the regular salt called for. I told my wife, if we didn't like it, we would never make it again, and would heat a frozen dinner. If we did like it, we would make it again as often as possible. Turns out, we will be making it again, as often as possible.

  2. I make this as filling for tacos. It stretches the meat mixture when you need it too. I usually use garlic salt. Sometime I add a packet of taco seasoning.

  3. To the original recipe, we added carrots, green onion, and a bunch of fresh herbs (sage, basil, and parsley). This is a very versatile recipe, easily customizable. We loved it!

  4. All of my family enjoyed this simple and quick recipe. We weren't expecting it to taste as good as it did for some reason, but it's delicious just the way it is and doesn't need to be dressed up at all. I will gladly be making this in the nearby future. Thank you for sharing this.

  5. We LOVE this recipe - - just as is! So simple, but so good!! Thank you! Serving it up right now!

Tweaks

  1. We call this Hamburger Hash. This is one of my son’s favorite meal. I use onion, garlic & Mrs. Dash table blend to add flavor. I have never served it with rice. You already have your starch in the potatoes. Add veggies to your meal & your good to go.

  2. Add 1/4 medium onion when you put the potatoes in to cook. Then when ground beef is halfway cooked add 4 oz can of Hatch green chile. Tastes great on its own or stuff in a tortilla with some shredded cheese on top for a great burrito.

  3. Mexican style

  4. We call this Hamburger Hash. I use a bit of minced garlic with my onions & Mrs Dash Table Blend to add lots of flavor. My family loves it. My son’s favorite! You can add carrots or celery or any other veggie you like. But for us the meat & potatoes is enough.

  5. very delicious and is now a family favorite it makes for a very easy dinner through these tough times with the corona and stay safe everyone!

Growing up, my mom didn't keep any junk food in the house so if I wanted something sweet I had to find a way to make it (or go to a friend's house)! I loved looking through my mom's recipe books and trying to find recipes that I could make. I baked a lot of home made bread from Betty Crocker's Big Red Book, and every holiday, my mom and I would make pies together from scratch. I didn't actually get interested in cooking main courses until I got married and realized that I had to actually put dinner on the table every night. Just as I was starting to get the hang of it, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in May of 2007. This meant that I had to learn a whole new way of cooking - gluten free. I have accepted this as a new challenge and have fallen even more in love with cooking and baking. There is nothing like the feeling I get when I have success with creating a new recipe! My inspiration usually comes from a craving for something that I can't have because it is not gluten free. I immediately go back to my kitchen and learn how to make it myself! I also focus on creating recipes with all natural ingredients and avoiding artificial or added sugars.
