This recipe was award winning for me too. I took it to the ice bowl, which is an annual fund raiser put on by our disc golf club. (www.kcfdc.org) There were 28 entries and I took first place. It was the first time I ever attempted to make chili and it was the best chili I ever tasted too. I only added 2 onions to 1 ½ lbs of venison and 1 lb sausage then followed the recipe as is. I have won this event in the past playing disc golf, but winning the chili competition was much more fulfilling. The first place prize of $125 portable basket was really nice too. Thank You!

I couldn't believe how close this recipe is to the one I grew up on. I did tweak it a little by not using jalapena, added 1 tsp dried Mexican oregano, 3 cloves minced garlic added to the meat which was beef. I also add an additional tsp of salt and about 1 tsp of black pepper. I did have the smoked paprika which I think helped. I only used 1 T of cumin and upped the chili powder another tbls. Also, I used beef stock instead of water, used onl 1 onion and lastly I added about 1 tsp of cocoa which intensifies the overall chili flavor. This is really a very good base to tweak to your taste. This is award winning for my taste now with the changes and to the judges for my friends job at the airport where it was submitted with 24 other entries. She gave me the check for $250.00 and she kept the trophy. I think I should have gotten that too, but that's life.

I made this with ground turkey and WOW!! I make mine in the crockpot - just brown the meat then throw in the crockpot on low before I leave for work. Come home and have a wonderful dinner. Made it for a guy friend who told me when I meet the man I want to marry, make him this chili and a proposal is sure to follow!

This is a great base recipe. My guests wanted the recipe also. I tweaked the recipe a bit to suite my preference, but kept it very much the same. I added a large minced jalepeño, used 32 oz of beef broth to substitute for the water, added another 15 oz can of tomato sauce, added 8 oz of beef, 15 oz of hot Rotel tomatoes w/habeñeros, used 42 oz of black beans only, omitting the kidney beans, one bulb of finely minced fresh garlic cloves, and cut the cumin to 1/2 Tablespoon. I sauteed the beef, onions, garlic, peppers with 1 Tablespoon tumeric and 1 Tablespoon olive oil. I used extra lean beef so I had no reserve grease to drain. I will definitely make this again. The adjusted recipe serves 8 generously. For those who like it extra spicy, I served it with Chipotle pepper flakes on the side.

Love this.... I added 6 sugar cubes, a handful of choc chip morsels and a tablespoon of salted butter. It cuts the acid of the tomatoes and onion and just Smooths it put a tad. This is a great recipe. I also use beer instead of water! I add a dash of worstershire sauce, a dash of Pick-A-Peppa sauce and also some chipotle Tabasco. All to taste but YUM. I have the most popular chili in town!!

So here are a few things I adjusted for flavor: 1. Doubled the recipe and added an additional half pound of Ground Beef. 2. Used two red peppers in place of the green peppers. 3. Increased the jalapeno (seeded) to 3 large or 5 small chopped finely. 4. Reduced tomato sauce by 1 can to 3 cans for 5. adjusted ratio of kidney beans to black beans 3:1 6. Added 1 tbsp of fresh garlic minced, 1 tsp of onion powder and 1 tsp of garlic powder 7. Cooked on low all night 8. Added additional Chili powder and Salt to taste after main bulk of cooking was completed. (Approximately 2 more tbsp of Chili Powder and about 2 tsp of salt) IT CAME OUT AMAZING!! I WON MY WORK CHILI COOK-OFF WITH IT!!
